music has never been genuinely new. Even when the first human being blew into a hollow reed, s/he must have been reminded of something - maybe of the wind which had done it before, maybe of a bird.
music has always used ideas, concepts, techniques that already existed and remained recognizable in the process. At the same time, it has always been new, not despite, but because of its response to, and its interaction with, existing sound. Evolution proceeds in the same manner independently inventing the eye five or six times by responding creatively to a given situation. And each time a genuinely creative act took place, as most people will readily agree.
